The Société de services dentaires (the SSD)
The adventure began almost 40 years ago when the Société
de services dentaires (SSD) was founded.
In the early 1980s, the Association des chirurgiens dentistes du Québec (ACDQ) wanted to promote the development of insurance plans in Quebec and act as an intermediary between dentists and insurers. With this in mind, the association came up with an idea that would allow patients to find out the total amount of their insured care while still at the dentist’s office and dentists to receive their reimbursement directly from the insurer. How? By guaranteeing and bundling payments to dentists. For this dream to come true, the ACDQ had to tackle several major challenges: protect the professional autonomy of dentists, make it easier for a larger number of patients to access dental care, make it possible for these patients to pay only the uninsured portion of dental care, and eliminate all fee barriers.
Furthermore, the ACDQ needed an IT system that could process claims immediately and send the response to the dentists. Since such a system did not exist at the time, on October 8, 1981, the ACDQ created a subsidiary of which it is the sole owner: SSD. One part of its two-fold mission was to set up a program for direct payments to dentists.
